Treasure Island

Last weekend I had the pleasure to go to a VIP pool party at the Treasure Island in celebration of All-In energy drinks debut. I had never been there before and I was impressed with the pool/surrounding areas given the little amount of space they had to use. I really enjoy night photography and amongst mingling with friends I took advantage of the opportunity. The pictures don't do the pool area justice. Its gorgeous! -Erinn ;)

To Fill, or to Unfill

Sometimes in this crazy town we find we have to run to a gas station to get drinks and fill up our cars- kind of standard stuff- I went to one this morning called "Fill" on Durango just south of the 215- I also had to "unfill" as they put it when I got inside- I thought it clever enough to post! The unfill rooms were really clean, too, and the fountain machine stocked with all sorts of drinks to refill!

This artistic endeavor is one of the most amazing things I have seen in a while. It is located at the Wynn Las Vegas. Its a water wall with fiber optic lights that change color every few seconds. There are more than two statues who seem to be drawn to the wall, they are all walking towards it, almost as if they are in a trance. The reflection on the water is so captivating, you almost feel like one of the statues. The statues change color with the wall but they are different colors all at the same time. Its amazing. -Erinn ;)

Stargazer Lillie's were the flower of choice throughout the 7 weddings in June I was invited to this year. 7 also seems to be the lucky number in Vegas, where as the chapels were overwhelmed on 07/07/07 for many marriages for those who wanted to get married on the lucky date. The Biggest Little City in the World

Once upon a time, movies such as The Women and The Misfits put Reno on the map as the divorce capitol of the world. In fact, in those days, the words “Reno Nevada vacation” were simply a euphemism for “getting a divorce.” The famous Reno divorce ranches provided a perfect setting for sensationalized divorce stories. Since most of the guests of these ranches were young women, there was never a shortage of ambitious men hanging around trying to help the poor gals pick up the pieces, so to speak. Nowadays, since liberalized divorce laws have destroyed Nevada’s divorce monopoly, the divorce ranches are long gone. However, Reno has been reinventing itself as a cultural center and host to some of the most exciting special events in North America. Today, the words “Reno Nevada vacation” imply all sorts of fun and excitement.

There are lots of activities to join in on such as hiking, skiing, snowboarding, ATV trails or you can grab an inner tube and float down the Truckee river that runs right through the middle of town.

When you decide to tour Reno Nevada, you will discover countless things to see and do. Virginia Street is the center for gambling and special events. Check out the famous Reno Arch, which was erected in 1926 in celebration of the completion of the Transcontinental Highway through Reno. The sign declares Reno as “The Biggest Little City in the World.” Reno also offers many cultural activities such “Reno Is Art Town” event in July. If you want to attend a Reno concert, ballet, art show, ballet performance or poetry reading, this is the place to go. The Pioneer Center for the Performing arts is another excellent venue for a Reno concert. The theatre is home to the Reno Philharmonic, the Nevada Festival Ballet and the Nevada Opera.

In August you can look forward to the "Hot August Nights" where classic cars from around the world come together to showcase their amazing vehicles. In the beginning of September you can also look forward to the "Rib Cook-Off" Which features several famous BBQ cookeries competing for the best ribs! Its delicious!

Before or after any performance, you can take a walk along the Truckee River Walk and watch the river as it flows from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. If you walk east towards downtown Reno, you pass the place where divorcees have thrown their wedding bands into the water.

I took this picture at the Wynn Las Vegas a few months ago. I almost walked right past it without giving it a second thought. Its just a couple walls after all. I just love the perspective. On a side note, Im moving to Reno in less than two weeks, so hopefully Christy, Wendi and Dave have taken some really cool pictures these last few months and will want to share. Because of my move I will post some pictures that I took while in Reno in a few days. I cant wait to get up there and take pictures of the Truckee River, Tahoe and the overall layout of the city! Evening Glow. This event was the last of the main hot air balloon events. All the balloons lined up on main street and filled up. Apparently if there is no wind to disturb them they all light up in unison and follow the beat to songs played. Very entertaining. I hope everyone enjoyed the photos. Welcome to the hot air baloon festival held in Panguitch Utah, held during the last weekend of June!! It was an amazing experience!! Up to 35 baloons in the air at one time. In Las Vegas there are many escalators everywhere, especially on the strip to help people move along. The first escalator is inside the Wynn, I just happened to see the shot and I grabbed it. The second is when Dave and I were headed back to our cars after our photography adventure, this man decided to give his legs a rest, which is a very understandable feeling, especially after making the trek up and down the strip! -Erinn ;)

Danny Roberts is a brilliant local artist here in the Vegas Valley. I discovered him just over a year ago at First Friday and have keep an eye on his artwork ever since. First Friday is an event, downtown Las Vegas, every First Friday of the month. First Friday features artists, free walk through of the art galleries, food, and entertainment. He sells $20 canvas prints, of which I have bought at least a dozen by now. These few paintings do not even scratch the surface of his great collection. He has an astounding talent and ability of portraying our most basic human instincts, actions, feelings, irony and society's conflicting morals/politics through his paintbrush. Freemont Street Experience

The Freemont Street Experience was first created in 1905 and it was the very first street to be paved in Las Vegas! The real excitement is in 1995 when the canopy above Freemont Street was built, its stretches over 5 football feilds long and then in 2004 they updated the canopy to LED technology to enable evern more detailed light shows. There is currently over 12 million light blubs and the structure weighs over 24,000 pounds. The investment of the canopy cost 70 million. I recieved my information from a handy website called: http://www.vegasexperience.com. But I think the real history is that Freemont Street was named after Colonel John Freemont, an explorer who explorered Nevada with Kit Carson, Carson later becoming a name of a city in Nevada that was to become the capital of our state one day. School is finally out for elementary schools for the summer!! Today the boys I babysit, celebrated by going to chuck-e-cheese!! They came home with this stuffed hammer and of course choose to slam it into their heads as hard as they can, while constantly giggling. They are VERY excited to be done with school! -Erinn ;)

This is a shot of your typical Las Vegas Boulevard, a.k.a. 'The Strip', traffic on the weekend. Congested and slow because everyone is looking at the glitz, glamor and tourists. Unfortunately lately though it seems like Las Vegas traffic has been rather fatal around the city. Its really unfortunate the lives that have been lost. Everyone please drive safely!!! -Erinn ;)

The Art Bar!

Everyone!! This is the Art Bar of our lovely lady of Las Vegas, it is located on Wyoming and Main, on the North East corner. It is quite the spectacle from the street being that the building is bright green. The Art Bar is a trendy scene in Vegas especially on First Friday when all the art galleries in the area open their doors for free and you can browse around. A lot of people head to the Art Bar before or after First Friday to do some mingling. Unfortunately there is a cover charge of $5 and it just so happens that I had no money on me when my friends and I went. So it still remains a mystery to me, this trendy bar that so many have talked about! One of these days I will make it back down there to take a look inside. So far, the parking lot was completely entertaining in and of its self. Haha! -Erinn ;)

Red Rock Hotel and Casino

Red Rock Hotel and Casino was built in Las Vegas amongst protest because it is deep within residential areas and very close to our State Park: Red Rock. The designers of the Red Rock Hotel and Casino really made this Casino stand out amongst the rest. They made an amazing effort in making this casino as beautiful as it is. These pictures are just some of the entrance into the Red Rock. -Erinn ;)

This picture was not taken in Las Vegas, in fact Adelanto California at a race track there. But the picture is highly relevant to Las Vegans. I couldnt tell you the amount of people that I know in town who love to go out almost every weekend to ride their quads, 4 wheelers, etc... Las Vegas and Clark County in general has a lot of Sandstone, either West of the Vegas Valley or over to the Logandale/Overton area you will find beautiful red rocks. They are so completely Ideal for rock climbing, bouldering, repelling and hiking. Just be careful in these summer months, its too hot, drink lots of water!! -Erinn ;)

Tacos Mexico

I met a friend for lunch the other day at one of my favorite mexican places Tacos Mexico, and found someone had driven their car right into the lobby. The amazing thing was while there was a huge hole in the wall, the drive-thru was still open, and the tacos were excellent! Tacos mexico is a small chain out here, and they serve some of the most authentic fast food mexican I've been able to find here in Vegas. The wall has since been repaired, and its now business as usual!

Calico Basin

I went repelling not to long ago in Calico Basin, I came back to the trucks early and was sitting on the tailgate when this little girl all dressed in red comes from around the sandy bend, skipping along the path. She almost startled me when I first saw her. She was seemingly alone for quite awhile but then I noticed her family was slowly walking up the path behind her. Calico Basin is not far outside of Vegas, it sits at the base of Red Rock. Calico Basin has always been one of my favorite outdoor locations in Las Vegas, they now actually call the state park: Red Springs Natural Area. -Erinn ;)

Yesterday on the news it was announced that the Frontier Hotel and Casino was sold. Gillies Dance Hall, Restaurant and Saloon is inside of the Frontier Hotel and Casino. Any reservations made more than 60 days in advance from yesterday will be promptly cancelled. So if you are in Vegas within that time frame I highly recommend you take a visit before it does close.

Gillies restaurant is open from 4pm to 9pm, its a great BBQ place, delicious!

There is bull riding, I have tried a few times, it is an adrenalin rush! This is a picture from the opposite side of the ring and spectators watching the riders. The bull riding is like Dylans, but on Fridays and Saturday nights they have bikini bull riding at midnight. They are open more days of the week than Dylans and offer different activities on different days. I remember hearing something about Mudresseling Mondays, but alas have not seen it for fact.

Thursdays are ladies $1 drink night, then on Fridays and Saturdays they have a beer special served like so... and they occasionally have live bands that are very fun!

Personally I go for the dancin and the dancin is always a grand time!!! They have line dancing lessons at 730 and 830 on Fridays and Saturdays. We will miss you Gillies!!! -Erinn ;)

Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas is claimed to be the closest you can get to Germany without having to obtain a passport! Im told that the original Hofbrauhaus is located in Munich Germany, places like this make me want to travel the globe! It is located on the south east corner of Paradise and Harmon, downtown near the Hard Rock Hotel, so keep your eyes peeled ;) Here is the locations website: http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/

It features a live band and plenty of entertainment, I have never been to a restaurant/brewery that involved its customers in everything so completely! From dancing in conga lines, to contests, to sing alongs, to standing on tables!! Not to mention that their food is absolutely delicious!! Its a single story location, but the ceilings reach several stories high, the high ceilings amplify the music and singing!

Of course the Hofbrauhaus is really well known for its speciality brewery items and its pint size beers, you can buy smaller ones if you want, but these are the most common.. as you can see my friend Mark decided to stay seated for one of the moments where everyone was standing on the tables and benches. Its a guaranteed good time! You cant help but succumb to the positive energy atmosphere! -Erinn ;)

Sorry for the total lack of posts! Life gets busy here in Vegas as Im sure it does everywhere else, so we are back in business... for now, haha. No worries.

This is a picture of my friend Robert Gain, one of our great U.S. Army Service men, riding the mighty mechanical bull at Dylans Dance Hall and Saloon.

Dylans is a country western bar here in Las Vegas, besides the bull there is a great dance floor where many Las Vegas locals come to dance the night away on Fridays and Saturday nights! They teach line dancing at 8pm and are open till 5am, or till everyone goes home, which may not be till sunrise. Its a classic Las Vegas landmark located off of Boulder Hwy and Flamingo! More landmark items to come -Erinn ;)

Hey all! Sorry for the delay in posting- my computer has been having... issues. But I think they are all fixed now, we shall see, though I still haven't been able to get my new pics off of the camera onto the computer.

Anyway, in the meantime- this is Cedar Ridge out at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is neat for a couple of things- the first is the deep red coloring that contrasts with the browns surrounding it, and second, there is a trail on top that leads down to the bottom of the canyon.

Some of the interesting things around the Grand Canyon: McDonald's, while not particularly interesting of itself, this is the nation's 2nd most expensive McD's! These Coke machines were cool looking I thought, painted in the theme of the Grand Canyon. And the last building is the Kolb Studio, on the Bright Angel Trail. It is an old house (refurbished) overlooking the Grand Canyon, actually built on the canyon edge. It has

been converted into a bookstore and an art gallery.

The other day I had the great fortune of going on a tour of the Grand Canyon. We flew out on Scenic Airlines, and got some great shots from the air. It was really interesting to see the Hoover Dam and the new bridge from the air. I was fascinated by the new road being built to accomodate the bridge as well

Millions of years ago, the Las Vegas Valley was under water. As such, there are many fossils in parts of the valley of sea creatures. I found these shells the other day out near Red rock, though they are older than the rocks typically found out at Red Rock itself...

Hey all! Sorry about the recent absence... I have a lot of respect for anyone that can post daily! How do you keep up?!?

Anyway, one of the cool things about the growth of Las Vegas occurs when a new road is opened up, or made to go through certain areas that it didn't previously. When that happens, new and interesting things pop out of the desert! I was driving down one such road the other day, and saw a giant toy house being built. i believe it is a private residence, but the whole thing looks like it could be a fun house or something...

Desert Burn

As the weather is warming up, sunburns are becoming more common (I got my first one of the year this last weekend too). Believe it or not, rocks get sunburned as well. The dark brown crust on this rock is what is known as "desert burn" and while no one knows what exactly it is, it is thought minerals inside of the rock are leeched out during rainstorms, and then oxidized on the surface in the sun, causing a darkenend "burned" look.

Golden Opportunity

I was out hiking yesterday, and saw my Golden Picture of the day fly by! It was a Golden Eagle! I've seen them before, but this is the first one I was able to get a picture of (that came out anyway). There is some good information on them on wikipedia and on the audobon society webpages. They like the more temperate mountainous areas, and are found all over the world, including Japan, Europe and North America.

This is my excellent shot of a mountain (or arctic) bluebird! Can you find him? The Mountain Bouebird is the state bird of Nevada and Idaho, is small, and very blue... They are also like to tease photographers, by taunting them into raising the camera to take the shot, and then taking off right as the release is being depressed... But I tricked this one!

Desert Crustacion

I was at my friend's house last night and as we walked into the entry way of the house, we found a scorpion in the corner of one of the doors! When you get down and look at it fromthe side, it looked almost like a shrimp... just smaller. These insects are all over the place, but for the most part live in their own little areas. They like to inhabit dark areas, especially piles of wood. They are also known to find their way into palm trees. There have been a few quarantines over the years of trees with nesting scorpions. They also like to get into the walls of houses, and lay their eggs along the power cables. So be careful the next time you go digging in your walls and climbing palm trees!

One of the interesting things about Las Vegas is we never seem to run out of walls- we are always building new block walls around our communities and properties... when people first move here, that is often one of their complaints- they aren't used to having walls all around them, and then after they live here a while, they complain the walls aren't high enough...

They can add a touch of class though, and they do help to keep the communities distinct from one another.

As I was working yesterday, I saw a trio of Butterfly Moths ( I don't know their actual name, but that is what we always called them) flitting around some of the flowers. To give you an Idea of how fast the wings are going, i had to use a flash and an ISO 1600, with the corresponding aperature and shutter speeds- and that still didn't stop the wings! some of the pics I got look sort of like ghosts... maybe they should be called Ghost Moths...

I was driving by a preschool the other day and saw these bikes all lined up at the gate, almost like they're ready to get out and play! That is exactly how I'm feeling right now, the weather is great, and I'm stuck at work, though I'm ready to play! I was reading on the NY, NY DP and he said it went from 11 degrees to the 60's. It went from the 50's to the 90's here! It's great!

Airport Construction

This is what the runway at McCarran looks like right now... Just Kidding! A third terminal is now being added to the airport, to try and quell some of the expected traffic- as it is the airport is expected to reach its capacity by 2016, and so plans for a whole new airport are underway. The new terminal is supposed to be operational by 2010. The only worry I have is whether they are going to be able to shorten the security lines... they're not too bad, it only takes about an hour to go through them now...

Ascending Planes

This is the median between the up escalators at the D Concorse at McCarran International Airport. Currently, according to Wikipedia, McCarran is the nation's 6th busiest airport, and services more of Southwest's flights than any other airport. I liked the progression of the planes as it went up... the down escalator has the planes going down- again pretty cool!

St. Louis, MO from St. Louis, IL

Another interesting thing about St. Louis- it is actually in two states! This is from the Illinois side of St. Louis- we walked across the bridge here and found that half way across is the state line- pretty neat! I'm not sure which river it is, but there are two main waterways that connect in St. Louis- the Mississippi and the Missouri. I will say it is more water than I've seen in a long time!

Greetings from St. Louis! Hey all, sorry about missing the last few days; I was in St. Louis for a conference and wasn't able to get online long enough to put up a post. I know this is a Las Vegas Daily Post, but I thought since there isn't one for St. Louis, I can post some pics!

This is the famous St. Louis Arch- I was really surprised to find out that is does not go over the river, which I always thought it did. It is huge though, rising over 600 feet into the air! There is a tram that will take you up to the top inside of the arch, but I didn't have the hour to wait in line to go... but it is a really neat thing to see, on my list of things to go back to for sure!

One of the great things here in Las Vegas is the 24 hour service- You can find just about everything you need at anytime- even the McDonald's! I thought this sign was cool because it really caught the eye, even though it is on the Strip, and there are so many things already there competing for a look... I also found it interesting to see other franchises getting in on the act- Panda Express and Chipotle- McD's gets the attention and the others get a second look... smart advertising!

Unbelievably to those of us who live here in Vegas, here is proof that there are some drivers here who can follow the road when driving! This is taken from one of the many street overpasses around the Strip, this one near the Wynn. They have been constructed to help pedestrians be able to cross the street without getting hit by a taxi! The taxis here are kind of like the ones in NYC, but they can go a lot faster here... This photo was taken by my camera, but the concept of the photo, framing and timing was by my friend Erinn

Springtime is here! We have the wind, the rain, and the ladybugs! I was at work the other day, and I saw this lady bug crawling on a wall. I was pretty excited when I saw it, because I didn't have to kill it! but it is exciting to know that the winter is almost over, and soon we'll have our good ol' hot weather again!

In all of the bad weather we've been having, some really neat things have shown up- Tuesday morning we had a perfect rainbow in the clouds as the sun cam up! it was cool- unfortunately, I couldn't get a small enough angle to get a picture of the whole thing- but it was huge!

We've had some rain this week! That may not sound too exciting to some, but when your average annual rainfall is less than two inches, it is exciting when you get a little! The weather has been really pretty cold; the wind has picked up a lot, a sure sign that spring is upon us! I took this picture of my windshield- I like seeing the images of the houses as they distort a little in the water- kind of a "melting clocks" theme!

Deadly Beauty

The other day I ran into a Black Widow Spider redoing her web after it had been destroyed by a barrage of water from a hose- being the slight arachnaphobe, my first thought was to kill it, but then I started to watch how she moved and how truly beautiful the spider was, and how intricate her web and movements were. I like this picture because it looks like she's suspended in the air. It was truly fascinating to watch, and I was actually sad when it came time to end the show...

This is a full size Adidas ad- full size as in the side of Bally's Hotel and Casino! Last weekend we had the NBA Allstar game, as well as all of the events that go along with it: it was pretty crazy around here! A number of the people I've talked to are glad its over: the crowds were large and, according to some, very rude and inhospitable. Unfortunately the outside perception of Las Vegas being a great place to party has really stuck, so when people come here, they assume they have the right to lose all decency... but its over now, and life runs on! Adidas had an ad on the MGM too which was really cool looking, but I couldn't get to it in time to get the picture before they took it down. I'm curious- do you think you can see through the film if you're in one of those rooms?

I was driving the other day and saw this firetruck spraying water a couple of hundred feet out into the desert- coming from a state that has many large forest fires every year, one nice thing about living in the middle of a large desert is that there isn't a whole lot to burn!

In case you didn't know (I didn't until a couple of days ago) its Chinese New Year! And if the giant sign at the Venetian didn't make it clear, Bellagio has a big pig (and its nose and ears move too!) to illustrate the point! According to Wikipedia, the new year started on the 18th, and will go till the end of the first lunar month, which will be in March. Until then, it'll be a great party!

UFO Landed!

To those skeptics out there here is proof there was a UFO out here! OK, it was really just the large dish over the entrance to the Fashion Show Mall. Underneath the dish is a myriad of shops, clubs, and restaurants, including one of my favorites in Vegas- Cafe Babareeba, a Spanish themed restaurant, which we'll get in a future post.

This is a view of the dam from the Nevada side, up the hill a ways. One of the most interesting things (to me anyway) is the cables that go across the gorge- it boggles my mind to think how they were pulled to the other side.

One of the great thing about the Hoover Dam is trying to get across it! There is usually a long line of cars, and it can take a couple of hours to get to it and then cross- that was the case here, the line was very long, and I was able to get out and take several long exposures and miss the wait.

Hey all! Welcome back! We've all been a little busy, sorry for the abscence! Here is a picture of the Hoover Dam and the new bridge they are building to bypass the dam. They are someof the coolest architectural and engineering feats of the southwest! Both are huge projects, one created the largest man made lake in the U.S. (Lake Mead). The bridge was started in response to the attacks of Sept. 11, to create a bypass around the dam, which supplies electricity and water to Las Vegas, Boulder City and much of Southern California and Arizona.

I went out to the Duck Creek trailhead, which is next to the wetlands park this week. It is located at the end of Tropicana on the east side of town, next to the UNLV stadium. The water district is reclamating the land, so they are revegitating the area. It was a haven for birds. It was a warm, beautiful day! -Wendi

This is a picture looking straight up in the canyon. Anniversary Narrows is a slot canyon, where a river has cut pretty much straight down through the rock. In many places the canyon is only 4-5 feet wide, though 50-100 feet deep. -Dave

This picture is a play off of the pic Wendi took up at ice box canyon, just this one is in Anniversary Narrows. You can really see the different layers of sandstone, especially the green. I think the green is actually pumice, because I found a small fragment of pumice the same color further upstream. -Dave

Hello Friends and LVDP viewers! We apologize for the great delay in a post! With the days being shortened, leaving town for the holidays, and both Christy and I being working women we have found it hard to take some picts! Our friend Dave also a local Las Vegan, has offered to help get some posts up! Thanks Dave!
This photo is of an abandoned mine shaft near Anniversary Narrows at Lake Mead. They used to mine for Borox and Calcite along with other minerals around this area. Note the how the layers of the earth are almost perpendicular to the ground! That is caused by major faulting in the area. The area around the shaft is mostly clay, but there are igneous intrusions (Where lava flowed up into cracks in the earth) and deposited calcite veins all through the hill. -Dave
