Las Vegas City History - 1950 (Last Part) - December 18: President Harry Truman approves the creation of the Nevada Proving Grounds, the only peacetime, above ground nuclear testing facility in the continental United States. Merely 65 miles away, Las Vegas is the nearest city to the proving grounds.
